REVIEW: Autogramm – What R U Waiting 4?

Release date: September 21, 2018

Autogramm was conceived as a vacation band by experienced rockers Jiffy Marx (Hard Drugs, Blood Meridian), CC Voltage (Dysnea Boys, Black Halos and Spitfires) and The Silo (Black Mountain, Destroyer) — and that really shines through in the music. The band is clearly having a good time, and they are happy to share on What R U Waiting 4?

Fans of Gary Numan, Blondie, The Cars, and other synth-infused, 80s power-pop acts will lap up everything What R U Waiting 4? has to offer. The record leans unapologetically into its new wave and power pop influences, with The Silo going so far as to joke: “This ain’t your Mom and Dad’s power pop… Oh wait, it probably is.”

The record is catchy and hook-laden, opening with lead single ‘Jessica Don’t Like Rock’n’Roll’ (watch the video below) which is an ideal intro to Autogramm’s sound. Groovy basslines, synth flourishes and pep-filled drums bounce along beneath melodic, singalong vocals.

The remaining 9 tracks on the LP don’t stray far from this (admittedly successful) mould, although ‘Wandering Eyes’ and ‘The Modern World’ really dial up the synth. ‘Wandering Eyes,’ especially, with the synths front and centre, the slower tempo and plaintive vocals would be right at home on the Drive soundtrack.

It’s enjoyable to hear Autogramm mix it up with these songs while staying true to their 80s vibe, and as a whole, the record might have benefited from more of this. That’s a truly minor quibble, though, on what is a seriously fun album.

In fact, I can’t sum it up any better than The Silo did in a recent interview with Beatroute when he said: “It’s meant to be fun, really. That’s about it when it comes down to our band. We’re a vacation band. We just want to have fun, we want people to have fun at our gigs, and we want to go swimming more than any of those things.”
