NEW RELEASE: Spike Girls – Emerald Swarm EP

Release date: September 23, 2017

I’ll try to keep this review short and sweet — like the Emerald Swarm EP itself which contains five tracks and has a total runtime of less than 7 minutes.

In that time, Spike Girls treat us to five punchy tracks of raw, abrasive punk. “Take no shit,” the EP’s opening track tells us, and that sums up the band’s attitude. To add to the fun, the band members are pseudonymously named Hazy and Smokey, bringing to mind a pair of anarchist dwarves who got cut from the movie.

In this band and in this record, you’ll find all that is best in punk: searing aggression, community spirit and a desire to change the world. All this is epitomised in the EP’s accompanying statement: “For the dyke punk stoner skater girls slaying their world & protecting each other.”

Backing up the admirable political stance is some sweet hardcore punk. All in all, this is some noisy, righteous punk that will be enjoyed by fans of G.L.O.S.S. (R.I.P.) and Pie Face Girls.
