No More Live Music at The Backstage Lounge

The death knell has sounded for yet another of Vancouver’s live music venues. The Backstage Lounge, on Granville Island, will close for renovations at the end of this year. After its planned reopening in February 2018, it will no longer host live music.

Instead, it will become an Italian fusion restaurant and operate under a new name. The news seems to have been announced in a Facebook post by Ron Mill — a bartender at the backstage lounge and executive board trustee with Unifor Local 3000 — which was subsequently picked up by the Vancouver Sun. See Ron’s full post at the bottom of this article.

Ron later posted again, saying the Vancouver Sun’s article “is not exactly correct” and that the new restaurant will have “a larger focus on developing the restaurant into a pre-show venue for theatre patrons, as opposed to its current role as a daytime tourist spot, a restaurant, and a late-night music venue and nightclub.”

The news comes only a short while after the Media Club shut its doors and after the reopening of the Railway Club with less emphasis on live music.
