Summer in Vancouver is glorious — but screw that noise, and spend your August in dingy, sweaty rooms having your ears blown off. There is a whole raft of excellent shows going on this month. Here some of the best ones to check out.
As ever, a disclaimer that music is subjective blah blah blah. This is my list, and these are the shows I’m excited about this month.
Every Time I Die, Neck of the Woods + Anchoress – Rickshaw Theatre
This is a sweet bill any way you look at it, but Anchoress is also one of my favourite local bands, elevating this show into don’t-miss territory.
Ty Segall, Dopey’s Robe + The Intelligence Service – Vogue Theatre
One of the biggest names in garage rock hits Vancouver with support from two local bands that match his sound well. Check out my review of Dopey’s Robe’s self-titled album here.
Anciients, Dead Quiet, Mendozza, Hashteroid + Seer – Rickshaw Theatre
This is an incredible lineup of local metal bands — well worth the price of entry. Anciients, recently longlisted for the Polaris Prize, are kicking off a tour with help from some killer bands.
Although the Anciients show is my pick for August 4, there a few sweet shows on that night. Also worth checking out:
- Dad Thighs, Heavy Weather, Rosacea + Balance @ Toast Collective
- Blessed, Look Vibrant, Sissy Heathens, Dadweed + Mikey & His Shame @ The Astoria
Royal Blood – Commodore Ballroom
British rock duo Royal Blood recently released their second album, hence the current tour. Expect meaty bass guitar and foot-stomping drum beats.
Also worth checking out on August 8:
- Naomi Punk, Passive + Bored Décor @ The Cobalt
- Fried Egg, Policy of Truth, Crumb + Hygiene @ 333 (Hygiene is one of my favourite Vancouver bands right now)
I last saw Staggers & Jaggs supporting the Dreadnoughts, also at Pub 340, and they were fantastic — high-energy and a lot of fun. Blending aspects of rock, rhythm & blues, jazz with powerful vocals reminiscent of the Alabama Shakes and retro vibes, this show is sure to be jumping.
Rancid and Dropkick Murphys – UBC Thunderbird Arena
Catching these two legends on the same bill is a treat for punk fans. Skank and jig your way through the evening.
August 24 & 25
Descendents – Commodore Ballroom
It’s subjective, of course, but for me, it doesn’t get much better than this. Descendents, widely considered the godfathers of pop-punk, are one of the all-time greats. Known for taking long breaks and touring infrequently, catch these dudes while you can. August 24 is sold out and has been for a long time, but (at the time of writing) there are still tickets available for the second night.
Out for a Riff Vol. 1 – At the Waldorf
The successor event to Burger Fest has an incredible lineup — Weedeater, Black Wizard, Brass, Satan’s Cape and more will rock your socks off. Check out the after party at 333, too.
