There’s never a quiet month in Vancouver — which is good because we like it loud — but May, in particular, kicks off with a wild first week of shows. Hold on to your hats, and let’s dive in!
As ever, a disclaimer that music is subjective blah blah blah. This is my list, and these are the shows I’m excited about this month.
Road Rash, The Hazytones + Lou Danger and the Thrills – The Media Club
It’s $5! The Media Club seems unlikely to be with us much longer, so head down for this show. All three bands are fun, but for me, the highlight is the Hazytones, bringing their stoner sound over from Montreal.
Dead Quiet + Woodhawk — The Cobalt
Locals Dead Quiet have teamed up with Woodhawk from Calgary for this ‘Vagabonds of the Western Gig’ tour. These are two fantastic metal bands, so don’t miss this one. Extra riffs will be supplied by R.I.P. and Dealer.
The Shit Talkers — SBC
I’ve had a soft spot for these East Van punks since seeing them support SNFU last year. This may or may not be the band’s CD release party (delivery dependent), but either way, it will be a rocking show.
The Mahones w/ The Brass Action — The Rickshaw Theatre
Make it a Celtic punk weekend with the Mahones on Saturday and Flogging Molly on Sunday. Always great to see locals in the support slot, too.
Flogging Molly — The Commodore Ballroom
Not much needs to be said. You all know Flogging Molly and what they can do on stage. Check ’em out at the Commodore.
Sacri Monti, Astrakhan, Filth Minister + Doctor Claw — The Cobalt
Prepare yourself to be absolutely blasted by these four heavy bands. Out-of-towners Sacri Monti are supplemented by locals Astrakhan and Doctor Claw, plus Filth Minister coming down from Whistler.
The Dreadnoughts — Pub 340
Motivated by nostalgia for bygone shows, Dreadnoughts are returning to Pub 340 for what is sure to be a rager. The band’s folk-punk sound is the perfect soundtrack for a debaucherous evening.
Hashteroid — SBC
Not to take anything away from Needs, Woe Monger and Wormwitch (who are also performing at this show), but Hashteroid is the band that made this show jump out at me. Nights at SBC are always fun, and this one won’t be any different.
Modified Ghost Festival — The Rickshaw Theatre / Red Room
The 2nd edition of this festival from promoters Modified Ghost, this event boasts an impressive lineup. You won’t want to miss any of the bands, but just to pick out a few highlights: Candlemass, Cro-Mags, Comeback Kid, Black Wizard…
