After a quieter festive period (I saw a whole bunch of bands play their “last show of the year” in November), things are hotting up again in Vancouver’s rock scene. There are tonnes of great bands to see during February — both local rockers and out-of towners.
As ever, a disclaimer that music is subjective blah blah blah. This is my list, and these are the shows I’m excited about this month. So, without further ado, let’s get going, shall we?
Frank Turner – UBC Thunderbird Arena
Starting strong from the very first day of the month, head over to UBC’s Thunderbird Arena for the heartfelt folk punk of Frank Turner. He’s actually there supporting the Arkells, but for my money, he’s the one to see.
The Belief Experiment – Media Club
This is a release party for the Belief Experiment’s new album, YVR (reviewed here). Their grungy brand of rock will be backed up by three other local bands: Sail With Kings, The Suicide Ring and We Found a Lovebird.
Thursday, February 16 represents a dilemma. There are two bands playing at different venues that are both well worth seeing.
Dopey’s Robe – The Cobalt
Enjoy a classic surf sound from this band who supported the Allah-La’s sold-out show last year. They released a strong self-titled album earlier this year and undoubtedly have more to offer in the future.
Cloud Nothings – The Biltmore Cabaret
Back with a new album after three years, these post-hardcore noise rockers were heavily acclaimed for their previous two LPs (released in 2012 and 2014).
Contra Code – LanaLou’s
On the bill with You Big Idiot, The Corps and Mooshy Face, this is a chance to enjoy some classic punk. It’s fast and it’s fun.
